上海对比窗艺廊将于2010年8月8日至9月1日举办魏立刚个展[金·麒]  2010 魏立刚书象制造。届时将展出魏立刚为本次展览所创作的十四幅宣纸新作。当代中国前卫书法的先锋人物魏立刚,把在对比窗艺廊的首次个展献给[金·麒] 。

“麒”,中国神话中四灵兽之一,是中国传统文化神气力量的典型代表,也是繁荣和成功的吉兆。在魏立刚的审美看来,“麒”变成了文字,神秘,能量及创造力的象征。魏使用厚重的黑色与黄金背景相对比,说明了不同形状的字形本身。“麒”是他的创造的工具,对文字进行解构,并通过书法蜕变重现。“麒”象征着魏立刚的神奇和强大的绘画功底。像“麒”的精神,魏的笔触是神秘和不可预测的,却显而易见被图腾般的力量所加强。魏立刚的图像中,黄金是高尚而明亮的,体现了中华传统文化以及唤起古老国度的优美记忆。

[金·麒]2010魏立刚书象制造,是魏立刚基于汉字及其抽象书写而衍生出来的抽象艺术,贯穿整个系列,金色的背景与坚固的黑色,淡淡的灰,深红以及饱和蓝形成和谐对比。2010年所创作的“上”以及2010年所创造的“佛指“,魏立刚填补了抽象与具体之间的鸿沟。2009年的作品“漳护斋戢园集”凸显出魏立刚如行云流水般的笔触,源源不断,重叠,旋转,缠结,敏锐。魏立刚以瞬间笔触的方式表现山川、云海,花草。但在2010年创作的作品“铜雀台”以及“木马”中,魏立刚着重每个笔触的细节,重新认识汉字这个视觉符号的结构,难以辨认笔画的开始与结束。在金系列中,魏立刚展现了魔幻的文字视觉世界,以及笔墨特有的性情。这些新作品来源于魏立刚对中国文字的无穷探索。与魏立刚数学及物理的文化背景有关,他将书法进行了深刻的变革,形成崭新的具有中国本色特制的抽象艺术风貌。

魏立刚

魏立刚,著名艺术家。1964年生于山西大同,数学神童。1981年考入天津南开大学数学系。后对书法产生浓厚兴趣,拜津门名家李鹤年习书法。90年代后期移居北京,专注于艺术和作品创作。魏被认为是当今中国最出色的前卫书法家之一,通过汉字书法资源试图建立中国自己的抽象艺术 。

SHANGHAI – [Gold·Unicorn] Graphimage by Wei Ligang 2010, an exhibition featuring 14 new calligraphic Xuan paper paintings by Wei Ligang, will be on view at Contrasts Gallery, from August 8 – September 1, 2010 at No 181 Middle Jiangxi Road, g/f, Shanghai, China. Wei Ligang, the pioneer of Chinese Contemporary calligraphy avant-garde dedicates his first solo show at Contrasts Gallery to the Chinese Unicorn (QÍ) - one of the most mysterious totemic creatures in Chinese mythology.

The Chinese Unicorn, one of the four magic and sacred animals at the origin of Chinese Myth, is the epitome of strength and miraculous power in the Chinese traditional Culture, and also a legendary auspicious omen of prosperity and success.Thus in Wei Ligang’s aesthetic, the Gold Unicorn becomes the symbol of the creative power of writing, the vital and mysterious energy of Chinese characters. Wei’s use of thick black against the golden background, illustrates the grapheme itself under different shapes. The Unicorn is the creative vehicle of the artist, who engages, deconstructs and recreates through the calligraphic metamorphosis. “QÍ” symbolizes the miraculous and powerful aspect of Wei’s painting. Like the Chinese Unicorn’s spirit, Wei’s strokes are mysterious and unpredictable, yet punctuated by a palpable strength and totemic power. Gold is the noble, luminous and wise world of Wei’s Graphimage, which embodies the long Chinese cultural heritage and recall the elegance of the Ancient State.

In [Gold·Unicorn] Wei’s calligraphy conceptualizes abstract landscapes; and throughout this series, gold backgrounds are harmoniously contrasted with solid black to light grey, deep red to saturated blue. In Ascending (2010) and Buddha Fingers (2010) Wei rides the chasm between abstract and figurative. Stroke after stroke his brush turns tirelessly in Zhanghu Study, Jiyuan Collection (2009), endlessly flowing, spinning and penetrating. Fleeting strokes give way to birds, horses or flowers. But in Bronze Sparrow Terrace (2010) and Wooden Horse (2010), Wei concentrates on the significance of each stroke and the structure of each character opposed to the representative aspect of the picture.

Wei creates a new visually complex language rich in magic and meaning in each stroke of this golden series. These new works are the result of his overall exploration into Chinese characters. Influenced by his background in mathematics and physics, Wei has the ability to deconstruct Chinese characters into abstract patterns that nevertheless stay true to a deeply rooted classical origin.

About Wei Ligang

Wei Ligang was born in Datong, Shanxi Provence. A child prodigy in mathematics, Wei entered the prestigious Nankai University in Tianjin at the age of 17. While pursuing his mathematics degree Wei became engaged in calligraphy, studied under the renowned Li Henian. In 1988, He dedicated himself to his medium and in the late 90’s moved to Beijing to concentrate on and further develop his art. Still pushing boundaries, Wei is recognized as one of the most distinguished avant-garde calligraphers in China today.
